Board Governance: Deep Dive into Board Governance Essentials
Take a deep dive into the essentials that every Board Member and Executive Director should know in order to govern their Non-Profit organization. Sari LaBelle from SL Strategies and Insights will lead participants through two virtual workshops and group discussions to provide participants with a deeper understanding of their specific priorities for governance improvement and how they can tackle these priorities for their organization.
Topics will include:
-
legal obligations and role of the board,
-
differentiating between governance and operations,
-
rightsizing and customizing an organization’s governance model and practices for an organization’s size and developmental stage,
-
use of committees,
-
recruitment, and orientation,
-
policy development,
-
optimizing the relationship between the Board, ED and staff.
Participants will leave the series with a tool kit of best practices to put into use in their organization and an action plan for improving their organization’s governance. Participants should come prepared to dive into their current governance challenges and top of mind questions to take their governance to the next level.
Session 1 (Nov. 21): Legal obligations and the role of the board, differentiating between governance and operations, recruitment and orientation best practices, use of committees and terms of references, board evaluations
Session 2 (Nov. 28): Policy development and best practices, optimizing the relationship between Board, ED, and staff, ED performance evaluation, strategic planning, risk assessment and management, right sizing your governance model and processes for your organization
Participants are not required to attend both sessions, but it is encouraged. Optimal results are achieved when both the ED and their Board are in attendance.
