Board of Directors Positions
Community Legal Information (CLI) is an Island charity that provides legal information, public education, justice system navigation, and lawyer referrals. Our goal is to provide Island residents with useful and understandable information about our laws and the justice system. CLI is governed by a Board of Directors. CLI is now accepting applications from people interested in joining our Board of Directors.
Authority
The Board of Directors is the legal authority for Community Legal Information (CLI). As a Board member, a Director acts in a position of trust and is responsible for the effective governance of the organization, which includes fiscal responsibility and strategic direction. Please note that this is a governance board, not an operations board.
Requirements
- Commitment to access to justice and plain language legal information.
- Basic understanding of not-for-profit governance.
- Willingness to serve on committees.
- Participation in Board meetings and the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
- Willingness to support and promote special events or projects.
Responsibilities
- Participate in Board discussions and decisions in governance about policy, finance, strategic planning, and senior personnel.
- Stay informed about the importance of plain language legal information and access to justice issues.
Directors will
- Bring their knowledge, skills, and diverse life experience to inform the work of the Board.
- Review and approve policy and other recommendations received from standing committees, and theExecutive Director.
- Participate in the review and development of CLI’s bylaws, Board of Directors policy manual, andstrategic plan.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Act in the best interest of the organization.
- Participate on Board committees.
- Promote CLI’s work and services to the community and various stakeholders.
- Approve and review CLI’s annual budget and financial statements.
- Approve the hiring and release of the Executive Director, including their contract.
- Assist in developing and maintaining positive relations among the Board, committees, and thecommunity to meet CLI’s objectives.
- Ensuring CLI’s commitment to a diverse board and staff reflects the community it serves.
Assets
- Experience working on a non-profit or other Board of Directors.
- Human resources expertise and training is an asset.
- Marketing and fundraising experience is an asset.
- The ability and desire to be an active and engaged member of the Board.
Term
- 3-year term with potential to renew up to two additional terms.
Time Commitment
- The Board meets quarterly.
- Committees meet as required.
- Annual General Meeting is held in September.
- Orientation is part of onboarding for new Board members.
- Approximately 15-20 hours annually.
