Job Description:

The Camp Director is responsible for the total Camp Program on behalf of the Camp Abegweit
Board of Directors and is directly responsible to the chair of Staffing and Program Committee.

The Camp Director must be mature and experienced, be at least 21 years of age, has a deep
commitment to the Christian faith and has an ability to see that Camp Abegweit operates in an
efficient, professional and orderly Christ like manner.

The Camp Director is responsible for providing Christian Leadership to the Camp staff.

The Camp Director will give leadership to: the morning watch, cabin devotions, vespers, and
staff devotions.

The Camp Director will ensure the themes of the Christian Development Curriculum
are lived out in all the program activities including: arts and crafts, music, outdoor education,
recreation program and camp fire.

The Camp Director is responsible for supervising and evaluating designated staff members. All
staff are accountable to the Camp Director, during programming sponsored by the Camp
Abegweit Board of Directors.

The Camp Director resides at the Camp when camps are in session and has private quarters for
his or her use.

The Camp Director will be proactive in preventing bullying and responds immediately to any
incidents among staff and campers.

The Camp Director will work in cooperation with the Executive Director.

General:
● Ensuring that all aspects of the Camp reflect the Christian faith, which is its reason for
being, and adheres to the policies of the United Church of Canada.
● Ensures that the program is consistent with the mission of the Camp and that all
campers and staff experience an environment of safety, love, and respect.
● Ensures that all Camp program aspects reflect the Christian faith.
● Provides leadership to the total program that is consistent with the Camp’s vision –
ensuring a Camping environment of safety, love, and respect, where Christ’s loving
presence is celebrated and shared.
● Establishes effective and supportive relationships with Board, staff, parents, and
Campers.
● Works with the Staffing and Program committee in planning and implementing staff
Training.
● Serves as a positive role model to other staff members and campers by participating in
camp activities.
● Ensures the program staff knows and follows the policies and regulations of the Camp.
Oversees the planning, scheduling and implementation of all aspects of the program,
and activities of the Camp.
● Oversees the physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing of campers.
● Strives continually to raise the standards of the Camp and its program.
● To lead campers in the daily cleanup of camp i.e. cabins, other buildings, grounds….

Administrative:
● Acting as liaison between the Camp Board and the day to day operations of the Camp.
● Is responsible for evaluating the following staff: arts and crafts coordinator, sports and
recreation coordinator, christian development coordinator and half of the CITs on a
weekly basis.
● Attends the monthly Board meetings and gives a report on the happenings of the camp.
○ Attendance required for the following meetings: May, June, July, August, and
September.
● Have a working knowledge of the Campbrain platform. Responsible for completing
weekly cabin assignments for both staff, volunteers, and campers. Complete other tasks
as needed.
● Work in coordination with the Assistant Director to create daily and weekly schedules for
staff and program using Google Workspace apps/services.
● Schedule & coordinate volunteers accordingly, based on registration numbers.
● Maintains and keeps daily and weekly Camp program plans, records (camper lists
health/medical records and incident/accident reports) and ensures all evaluations are up
to date.
● Ensures contact lists for campers and families are up to date at the beginning of each
Camp.
● Plans and supervises registration, welcoming and departure activities.
● Holds and conducts daily staff meetings.

Other Duties:
● Sleeps in a cabin when numbers warrant.
● Complete assigned clean up duties at the end of each Camp.
● Ensure personal items, equipment and assigned area in a cabin or in the lodge is at all
times kept in a clean, neat and orderly manner.
● Dress appropriately at all times, and wear provided uniform as directed by the Staffing
Committee.
● Other duties as required.

Characteristics:
● Has an ability and desire to work with children and youth.
● Has proven evidence of leadership in working with groups.
● Knowledge and commitment to the Christian Faith.
● A person who is physically, emotionally, and spiritually healthy and able to deal with the
stress of providing leadership to campers entrusted to their care over an extended period
of time.

Qualifications:
● Completion of college/university is considered an asset.
● Experience in dealing with supervising adults and children.
● Current Certification in Standard First Aid and CPR Level C
● Ability to work in a relationship with vulnerable individuals who are under the age of
consent.
● Complete a Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sectors Check by May 1 (of current
year)
● WHMIS training (provided)
● Physical demands associated with this position include extensive walking, lifting &
carrying heavy weighted materials (up to 50 lbs), Ability to work in inclement weather.

Evaluation:
● Will be evaluated at mid and end of season by the designated Board representative.
